Do Contact Lenses Make Your Vision Worse?

July 5th, 2008

Whether you are a new user of eyeglasses or have worn glasses your entire life, you may be considering switching to corrective contact lenses. Contact lenses offer comfort in many different ways, and also have an advantage from an aesthetic point of view. No matter what your motivation is, you may be considering contact lenses as an option if you have been diagnosed with or suffer from any of the following conditions:

• Myopia (nearsightedness)

• Hyperopia (farsightedness)

• Astigmatism (distorted vision)

• Presbyopia (need for bifocals)

If you are considering using corrective contact lenses, you should only do so under the strict supervision of a qualified eye care professional – preferably an ophthalmologist or a contact lens specialist. You should be prepared before going in to your eye care appointment by being aware of the different types of contact lenses that are available in the marketplace. This will help give you a head start in choosing the type of prescription contact lenses that are right for you. The types of contacts that are widely available include the following:

• Rigid Gas-permeable Contact Lenses (RGP’s)

• Soft Contact Lenses

o Extended Wear Contact Lenses

o Disposable Contact Lenses

Will my sight worsen if I start wearing prescription contact lenses?

Many people who are considering wearing corrective contact lenses to correct their vision issues are concerned about the possibility of harming their vision further simply by using contact lenses. They may have heard stories or rumors, or may even just have apprehensions about inserting a foreign object into their eye. First of all, contact lenses should be worn only when prescribed by an ophthalmologist, eye care professional or contact lens specialist. Corrective lenses should only be prescribed after a proper eye exam and diagnosis of one of the following: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia. Involving a professional from the very beginning will ensure that your eye care is appropriate, adequate and safe.

The Answer is NO!

According to the eye care experts, a corrective contact lens prescription will not make your vision problems worse. Many times when a person tries on contact lenses for the first time, there will be an adjustment period. At first the contact lenses may feel a bit uncomfortable and strange. If you are used to wearing regular eyeglasses, you may be taken aback by the fact that your peripheral vision is so much better with the contact lenses. In any case, whether you’re trying the contact lenses as your first option when diagnosed with vision problems or trying them after using glasses for any period of time, the visual improvement you will experience may be extraordinary. This amazing improvement may make vision without the contacts seem much worse than it actually is, especially the longer your eyes are allowed to grow accustomed to them.

This phenomenon can simply be attributed to the fact that the brain now has a reference point for comparing two images directly: the first one with corrective lenses and the latter one without. Prior to this it had nothing to which a real comparison could be made. Because of this, vision did not seem quite as unclear and blurred, when in fact it really was.

The bottom line is, with proper care and use; contact lenses should not affect your vision in a negative way. Using corrective contact lenses under the care of a contact lens specialist will ensure you are minimizing any chances of causing damage to your eyes.

Get Enough Sleep And Avoid The Risk Of Getting Cardiovascular Disease And Hypertension!

July 5th, 2008

It is a not a new discovery that eating good healthy food and regular exercise guarantees healthy body. But did you know that enough sleep also helps you to have a healthy body. Most of us know that less sleep makes us feel tired and not function properly. Medical research proved that enough sleep makes us feel better not only for a while but also it has power to impact our health in the future.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, forty percent of adults admit that they get less than seven hours of sleep instead of seven to nine hours of sleep. The main problem of not getting enough sleep is due to our hectic schedule, workaholic life style and less priority to sleep. We should give importance to our sleeping schedule for better life and hence, better health.

Most people believe that getting up early in the morning, working hard whole day and going to bed very late makes them to have a successful life. If you do not sleep enough, you will feel like sleeping in the middle of your work. In order to improve your quality of work you need to sleep minimum seven to nine hours.

The number of hours of sleep needed for one person varies from one person to another. This magic number can be found when you go for a vacation, going to bed at the same time every night and wakeup without using any alarm system. Continue this process for a consecutive of three to five days. You will wakeup at the same time every morning at the every time. Then you will get an idea of how much rest time is required by your body everyday.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, when we sleep the blood pressure reduces, blood easily circulates through the muscles, tissue, and energy levels are restored. If you are not giving importance to sleep, you’ll probably get cardiovascular disease and hypertension. If you give enough rest for your body, you may not be at risk of getting those diseases. It is advisable to consider investing money in an innovative sleep system available in the market!

How To Build Muscle Effectively

July 5th, 2008

It is not surprising that there is a lot of confusion in these modern times on how to exactly build muscle. Besides that, there are just too much information and misunderstanding on how to build muscle such as what type of equipment to use, how long one should spend in the gym, whether or not to use steroids.

Therefore, you must be aware and do your own research on the principles of muscle building.

Despite the information overload out there, principles do not change. For example, you must begin to understand how muscles are formed. Muscles are formed when they are recovering, not when you are in the gym.

When you are in the gym pumping away, you are actually creating micro-tears in your muscles. Therefore, when your muscles recover, they will naturally form better muscle tissues.

Combined with proper nutrition, it will escalate the recovery process of your muscles, resulting in bigger, leaner muscles. This is a principle you must remember.

Therefore, there are a few things other principles and points you must keep in mind in order to build muscles effectively.

1) Do not attempt a low calorie diet.

Increase in the intake of calories in you wish to gain weight and build muscle effectively. Protein and fats are a great source to start with to boost your body with the calories it needs. However, be careful with consuming too much calories as you will gain too much fat instead.

When you try to lose weight or fat by starving yourself, your body will lower its metabolism rate to preserve energy. Muscle building requires you to burn as much energy as possible. This is exactly why people lift weights. They want to burn as much energy as possible, to create as much micro-tears as possible for the muscle to recover and become bigger.

2) You must have a proper nutrition intake.

Just by lifting weights alone is not enough. You need to know the right nutrition intake to consume. This is important because without the proper nutrition, your body will lose muscle instead of gaining muscles. With proper nutrition, using free weights and heavy weights will quickly give you the muscles that you desire.

Having proper nutrition to build muscles also does not mean it is all protein based products. Although many perceive protein to be extremely important and the only nutrition needed, this is not true. Protein is definitely important but effective muscle builders know exactly what and the right amount of nutrition to consume.

3) Muscle building is a long term endeavor

When you start building muscle, you must realize that it must become your lifestyle. Although results can be achieved in a few months using proper methods and routines, you must continue to work and endeavor on this lifestyle. If not, your muscle will slack and eventually it’ll be back to square one again. But don’t worry, if you can hang on for a few months to achieve the body you want, you won’t find this lifestyle difficult.

Therefore, muscle building can be fun and extremely rewarding to boost your confidence and to increase the quality of your life, However you must remember to be practical at all times.

Can Eating These Organic Foods Assist in Re-growing Thinning Hair?

July 5th, 2008

Hair loss for men and women can be devastating to your confidence and sociability. Women especially can experience much anguish over thinning hair.

However, there are options to slow, stop or reverse this condition.

1. Hair transplants. This is probably the most invasive, expensive but quickest method to getting back a full head of hair. For those who have the time and money this may be an option for you.

2. Medicinal topical treatments. These are liquids or shampoo type products that you use over time to re-grow hair.

3. Diet! The food you eat can have a tremendous impact on hair loss and hair re-growth.

Nutrient rich blood flow to the scalp is essential for natural hair growth and luster. Dry brittle hair is a symptom of poor hair health. Excessive oil is also a symptom of poor hair health.

Hair needs good oils, monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. These are the good fats that help keep the LDL cholesterol down and are heart friendly as well as healthy for your hair such as; almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts, pistachios, and good oils such as olive oil, flaxseed oil or hemp oil. Flaxseed oil is high in omega 3 but even better is hemp oil that has the correct balance of omega-3 and omega-6, which is very important for healthy hair.

Studies done about Japan pre World War II showed that Japanese men maintained a full head of hair and that it was not until the western diet where saturated fatty foods were introduced that there was a rise in baldness.

Healthy hair also needs B-vitamins. These vitamins assist in making red blood cells which carry oxygen to all the cells and this is important for hair health. Foods that contain B-vitamins are; whole grains such as wheat, oats, quinoa, wheat germ and brewers yeast, also chicken, turkey, sea foods, dairy products, eggs, leafy green vegetables and a variety of beans.

The importance of minerals is often under estimated. A lack of minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc and silica can contribute to hair thinning. Some mineral rich foods are dark leafy greens, sprouts, sea weed, fruits and vegetables.

Vegetables that are high in these minerals are;

Squash

Sweet potato and regular potatoes

Lima beans

Peas

Spinach

Kale

Avocados

Cucumbers

Broccoli

Peas

Fruits high in these minerals;

Kiwis

Blueberries

Citrus fruits

Black berries

Bananas

Strawberries

Tomatoes

Nuts high in these minerals;

Pecans

Brazil nuts

Pine nuts

Pumpkin seeds

Walnuts

Sun flower seeds

Vitamin C is also and important vitamin for hair health and absorption of minerals such as iron. Fruit, especially citrus fruits are high in this vitamin.

Hair is mostly made up of protein and a protein rich diet of sea foods, poultry, eggs and nuts helps to keep hair lustrous. If you are going to eat red meat, choose very lean cuts.

If you stick to eating a common sense diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and nuts you should do well overall. Processed foods should not your first choice for food. Most of these foods contain preservatives, pesticides and MSG which are not necessarily the best choice if you are trying to resolve your hair issue.

Organic foods not only taste better but have a higher nutrient content which is what you want if you are trying to improve the condition of your hair. If you are entertaining the idea of a hair transplant, changing your diet before hand, during and after can enhance the overall experience. The same goes for topical treatments.

Good luck!

Vaccination Side-Effects Can Be Safely Addressed

July 4th, 2008

Canadian Medical Law upholds the right of all people to draw on a broad information base when deciding on medical treatments or drugs offered themselves and/or their children, particularly treatments/drugs associated with serious health risks. VACCINES ARE SUCH DRUGS.

Health authorities credit vaccines for disease declines, and assure us of their safety and effectiveness. Yet these assumptions are directly contradicted by government statistics, published medical studies, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports, and the opinions of credible research scientists from around the world. Yet, incredibly, most pediatricians and parents are unaware of these findings.

This article is not to tell anyone whether or not to vaccinate, but rather, to point out that other avenues exist before resorting to injecting a toxic cocktail in your body or your child’s to prevent disease.

Vaccines are not safe or effective. Studies internationally have shown vaccination to be a cause of SIDS (SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). One study found the peak incidence of SIDS occurred at the ages of 2 and 4 months in the U.S., precisely when the first two routine immunizations are given.

Another study found that 3,000 children die within 4 days of vaccination each year in the U.S. In the mid 1970’s Japan raised their vaccination age from two months to two years; their incidence of SIDS dropped dramatically from an infant mortality ranking of 17 to first in the world.

It is important to note that insurance companies, who do the best liability studies, refuse to cover vaccine reactions. Profits appear to dictate both the pharmaceutical and insurance companies’ positions.

In 1989 the CDC reported: “Among school-aged children, [measles] outbreaks have occurred in schools with vaccination levels of greater than 98 percent. Outbreaks have occurred in all parts of the country, including areas that had not reported measles for years.”

The CDC even reported a measles outbreak in a documented 100% vaccinated population. Reports suggest that the goal of complete “immunization” may actually be counter-productive, a notion underscored by instances in which epidemics followed complete immunization of entire countries such as Japan experiencing yearly increases in small pox following the introduction of compulsory vaccines in 1872.

By 1892, there were 29,979 deaths, and all had been vaccinated. In 1989, the country of Oman experienced a widespread polio outbreak six months after achieving complete vaccination. In the U.S. in 1986, 90% of 1300 pertussis cases in Kansas were “adequately vaccinated.” 72% of pertussis cases in the 1993 Chicago outbreak were fully up to date with their vaccinations.

You may believe that all is ok with vaccination especially if your child has had no reactions. Consider yourself lucky, or your child that is. But adverse effects do exist.

The documented long term adverse effects of vaccines include chronic disorders such as autism, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorders, dyslexia, allergies, cancer, and other conditions, many of which barely existed before mass vaccination programs. Vaccine ingredients include thimersol (a mercury derivative), aluminum phosphate, formaldehyde (for which the Poisons Information Center in Australia claims there is no acceptable safe amount that can be injected into a living human body), and phenoxyethanol (commonly known as antifreeze).

Recent studies in the U.S. and England suggest that vaccines cause autism. Mercury poisoning and autism have nearly identical symptoms, and a single day’s vaccination regimen may inject 41 times the level of mercury known to cause harm. Some infants receive 100 times the EPA’s maximum allowable amount of mercury through vaccines.

Victims of vaccination side-effects and others are now coming forward and demanding accountability. In the December 1994 Medical Post, Canadian author of the best-seller Medical Mafia, Guylaine Lanctot, M.D., stated, “The medical authorities keep lying. Vaccination has been a disaster on the immune system. It actually causes a lot of illnesses. We are actually changing our genetic code through vaccination…100 years from now we will know that the biggest crime against humanity was vaccines.”

The positions asserted above are not coming from a handful of fringe lunatics; entire professional organizations are speaking out. Criticisms of vaccines are being sounded by an increasing number of credible and reputable scientists, researchers, investigators, and self-educated parents from around the world.

Instead, it is public health officials and die-hard vaccine advocates (many of whom have a financial stake in the outcome of the debate) who are beginning to lose credibility by refusing to acknowledge the growing body of evidence and to address the very real, serious, documented problems.

Looking for alternative sources to vaccination is basically a must.

As a grandmother of a vaccine free 9 year old, I was forced to research this issue very thoroughly. I had to find an alternative to vaccination to save her from forced vaccination in order to attend school after moving to a new State. She was vaccine free and very healthy. This State is one of only 2 that does not allow philosophical or religious exemptions.

Changing schools was bad enough and to introduce her pristine body to a slew of poisons was more than I could stand. I knew that I had to find a way to counteract any side-effects the coming injections might produce. I did find answers that were affordable for a single mother and which insured that she would be cleansed from the toxins contained in the vaccines.

I was fortunate to find 4 different ways of addressing this issue of cleansing and am now sharing this information with others who feel the same way. Thank God that more parents are now opting for an alternative approach when it comes to disease prevention.

The BIGGEST Reason You Regained All That Weight!

July 4th, 2008

Ok, so you’ve gained weight and tried all kinds of diets and diet pills but nothing seems to work. Well, you do lose weight at the time but then it all comes back and it seems that there is always an extra pound or two more to contend with.

You start to despair that you will never lose weight but you go on searching for that perfect bullet or pill that will finally do the trick. I’ll let you in on a little secret, there is no such pill but there is an answer to your problem.

For the past 12 years I have been gaining 2 to 3 pounds per year and I recently found myself with 25 extra unwanted pounds. Because I am 7.5 ft tall, it is not as noticeable to other people. But my clothes know and I know.

I was feeling not too happy with myself. Here I was eating organic fruits and vegetables, not indulging in junk foods or pop and I was still gaining here and there, I even succumbed to the promised ‘lose weight now” with this “pill” and that “pill” which was as much a disappointment for me as I am sure it was for many of you reading this.

I’ve been in the alternative health business for 14 years and one would think that I knew better. But when it is your “butt” that’s on the line, the picture changes and you think that things won’t be the same for you because you know better. Wrong!

It wasn’t because I didn’t know the facts behind the obesity questions had reached a critical stage:

FACT: Obesity contributes to over 300,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone

FACT: 81% of people in the U.S. are overweight

FACT: 75 million people go on a diet every year

FACT: 50,000 people start a weight loss program everyday

FACT: 60 diseases are related to obesity

FACT: Obesity is gaining on smoking as #1 killer

FACT: Weight Loss industry accounts for 109 million per day sales

It’s just that I also bought into the weight loss hype and products and found my funds dwindling with no tangible results for my efforts. It wasn’t until I found the true cause behind permanent weight loss that things started to change for me.

It really was very simple. Remember when you would diet and you were so careful to watch those calories? The diet would last for a week or 2 weeks and at the end of the period you would have lost a few pounds and were ecstatic with the results?

So you went out and bought yourself a new outfit to celebrate the new you. Things were wonderful and you felt great.

But the weight came back and often with a vengeance. I now know why and the answer is so easy that I had to do a double take. Here I was, an alternative health care provider, and I had clearly missed the fact that toxins hold on to fat cells and that was why the weight comes back. Eureka!

If you don’t release the toxins, you don’t release the fat. Pure and simple, period!

That’s why that as soon as I started a cleansing and fat burning program, the weight just started melting off of me. After 9 days, I had lost 7 pounds and 8 inches of fat. I wasn’t too concerned about the weight loss but more so very pleased about the inches gone bye, bye.

At the time of writing this article, day 65, I have released 22 inches of fat.

I feel wonderful, my aches and pains have disappeared and I now know that getting older won’t be a chore for me anymore.

There was a time when I wondered if I would make it to 85, my mother’s age, and still be able to function, as I used to hurt in every joint.

Not anymore and I’m so happy with the changes that I have vowed to continue on a program that will allow me do to cleansing on a regular basis.

There’s no way that I will ever go back to my old ways of doing things. Life is too good now!

How To Test Your Thyroid At Home For Free And Avoid Costly Lab Bills

July 4th, 2008

When it comes to weight loss our glands, especially our thyroid, plays a very important role. If someone is complaining of being tired and listless, the first test done is usually one to see if the thyroid is working the way it should.

Years ago, Dr. Broda Barnes discovered a very simple and accurate method of testing the thyroid. Using his method, you can take your temperature and get a good idea of your basal metabolic rate and thyroid condition without putting out the big bucks for a laboratory test.

Put an oral thermometer by your beside.

Now taking your temperature is easy but must be done in a certain way.

What is interesting here, men can take their temp any time. For women who are in their menstrual years, the best reading will be on the 2nd or 3rd day after the menstrual flow starts. Now comes the fun part.

Anywhere between 97.2 and 98.2 is considered normal. If your temp falls below this range, it indicates a sluggish thyroid or hypothyroid condition. If above, your thyroid is overactive.

So what happens if your thyroid is low? Natural thyroid support is easy and should be considered before relying on synthetic drugs that often have side-effects.

There are good glandular forms of products out there and a knowledgeable health store assistant can give you some options. It is recommended that the starting dosage be 2 to 3 tablets a day. The chewable kind is the best and it should be done on an empty stomach. After about 2 months, most people can gradually reduce the dose to 1 tab a day but everyone is different. 1 tab a day is a good maintenance dose.

But the thyroid not only needs glandular support it also relies on iodine to make hormones. Our food is sadly lacking of iodine since it is so nutrient poor because of present farming practices. To make matters worse, chlorine and fluoride interfere with the utilization of iodine and make deficiencies more prevalent.

It is easy to see if you need iodine. First, it’s a good idea to test yourself using liquid iodine. Just paint a round patch on your stomach and watch to see how long your body takes to absorb it. If it is gone in a few hours, then you need to supplement.

To do that, just use liquid iodine, not the stuff you buy from the drugstore, that’s poison, but the one that is food grade. Take 2 drops a day for a week or 2 and then reduce the amount to one drop a day.

Here is what a well functioning thyroid will make you feel like:

• lifting of brain fog

• much newfound energy

• improvement in the skin

• regrowth of hair on the outside end of the eyebrows

• less confusion, memory loss and depression

• better circulation to hands and feet

• loss of excess weight

• less constipation

• feelings of calmness

• better sleep

• less food cravings

So you see, there are a lot of benefits associated with keeping your thyroid in good working order and checking to see if it’s working right is easy as pie.

How To Stop Your Body From Rusting Out

July 4th, 2008

Our liver is exposed to deterioration by acids that cause a rustic effect in our body and throws out our pH balance. An ideal pH to aim for is 6.4 for both urine and saliva.

Here’s why.

If our body is too acidic, it will draw on body fluid, lymph, intracellular and extra-cellular fluids to re-establish the balance. When very out of balance, the body will even draw from the bones, teeth and cartilage.

Excessive acidity attacks the body and causes irritation. If sweat is too acidic, it can inflame tissues and irritate the skin. Perfect examples are cases of eczema and hives.

Do you suffer from burning urine, joint pain or hemorrhoids? Do you find your skin aging rapidly, your hair no longer shiny and that your nails more brittle? Do you notice irregular sleep patterns, increased occurrence of colds, flu episodes, infections and headaches and decreased physical and mental energy, leg cramps, arthritis or osteoporosis?

Virtually all degenerative diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney and gall stones, and tooth decay are associated with excess acidity in the body.

Acids contained in foods are released during the digestive process or used by the body. These acids release hydrogen ions at varying rates. The greater the potential is for releasing hydrogen ions the lower the pH on a scale of 0-7.

Strong acids such as animal proteins are difficult to neutralize and eliminate. If ingested in large quantities, they force the liver and kidney to work harder. Weak acids such as vegetable proteins and carbohydrates are volatile and eliminated in the form of gs through the lungs. The body normally expels weak acids quite easily but if your metabolism is weak this won’t happen efficiently.

Here’s what you can do to help return your body pH to be more alkaline.

The first part to renewing your pH balance starts with your diet that should include the three food groups. If you eat properly, eliminating excess acid should not be a problem.

However, it will need help from supplements too. Now there are many forms of calcium. Some are acid forming and some are alkaline forming. One way to find out is by testing your urine and saliva on a daily basis.

This can be done very easily with a pH tester. You can use the pH litmus strips but these aren’t as accurate. What you want to get is a pH tester such as one that used in an aquarium for water testing. You then record your urine and saliva and look at the results.

On a chart, anything above 6.4 is alkaline and below is acidic. To regain some balance and alkalinity, you need to take a calcium supplement, preferably liquid carbonate as it is the best one absorbed.

If you are too alkaline, then look at taking calcium lactate which will acidify the urine and blood and bring you closer to that perfect number of 6.4.

This testing should be done daily if you want to keep on top of too much acidity or alkalinity.

Other foods such as green tea, spirulina, chlorophyll, chlorella, goat’s milk, whey and especially a dose of alkaline citrates measured to your metabolism by a professional can ensure proper balance and well being.

High Blood Pressure Causes You Need to Know

July 4th, 2008

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can be as dangerous as any other chronic disease. It’s also called the “silent killer” because people suffering from high blood pressure can usually not detect it early on, unless it’s diagnosed during a routine checkup. In our extremely hectic lives we sometimes neglect our blood pressure and stress levels. As such, it is important for us to recognize some of the causes of high blood pressure so that we are able to minimize or modify certain activities and practices and so avoid developing this condition.

There are many causes of high blood pressure but one important factor that seems to be involved in almost all cases is stress. For a very long time, doctors considered stress to be a contributing factor only and not a cause. But new evidence reveals that chronic stress is indeed a major cause of hypertension.

Everyone gets stressed out at times. The difference is that some can manage their stress well and take measures to relieve it while others ignore it, letting it build up until it explodes or results in other negative consequences or even illness. No matter what the circumstances, stress can be easily managed when one knows the right techniques and makes the effort to use them when needed.

There are countless ways to relieve stress. The simple pleasure of listening to music, for instance, can be very calming. The next time you feel like tearing your hair out put on your favorite music and it will work every time. This tried and tested method will certainly put your mind at ease.

Breathing in a certain way is also well known to relieve stress and has recently proved to work directly on blood pressure as well. A new method called “slow breathing with music” combines a breathing technique proven to lower blood pressure with relaxing music. This great new method offers numerous health benefits and takes only a few minutes a day.

High blood pressure can also be caused by a poor diet. You are what you eat, as they say, and our diet plays a very important role in regulating our blood pressure. For example, many people are now aware that excess sodium can make blood pressure shoot sky high. So it’s important to avoid salty foods and snacks and to not add table salt to your meals. A normal, balanced diet offers plenty of natural sodium without the need for added salt.

Another element of a poor diet is eating too much fatty food, which usually has a high amount of the wrong type of cholesterol. This is the so-called “bad” cholesterol that forms plaque in arteries that can build up into blockages with dire health consequences.

The answer to avoiding excess sodium, fat and cholesterol is simply to eat a balanced and varied diet of whole, natural and unprocessed foods. Natural foods contain a healthy balance of nutrients that become degraded through processing. For example, a fresh fish, fried or baked simply, is healthier than a pack of “fish sticks” which have been chopped, blended with starches and preservatives, dipped in salty batter and frozen.

Closely related to diet is our weight and activity level. A poor diet combined with lack of exercise will quickly lead to being overweight. Excess weight makes the heart work harder and increases blood pressure. At the same time, inactivity weakens the heart because, as a muscle, the heart needs exercise to be strong and healthy. Poor diet, excess weight and inactivity are a recipe for disaster.

Smoking and drinking too much alcohol are popular vices but they are both major causes of high blood pressure. The answer to smoking is simply to stop, one way or another. There is no safe level of smoking. Alcohol is more complicated because in the right amount it can even be healthy. It’s a tricky balance because even a small amount of excess alcohol on a regular basis can easily raise your blood pressure. How much is too much? That’s often difficult to say because different people handle it differently, but if you have regular hangovers and/or difficulty sleeping you are definitely drinking too much and this is surely having an impact on your blood pressure.

These are some of the major lifestyle factors that can be causes of high blood pressure. Doctors estimate that up to 95% of hypertension cases are the result of lifestyle. The good news is that changes in lifestyle, such as eating better and drinking less, are often the most effective way of treating your high blood pressure.

At the same time, it’s important to note that high blood pressure can also depend on genetic factors. In fact, there are many cases of the condition with no other possible explanation. If high blood pressure runs in your family the chances are high that you will develop it too. If this is the case, treatment with medications may offer the only solution. Having said this, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will always influence your blood pressure and reduce the severity of your hypertension.

How to Relieve Stress - 4 Ways to Relieve Stress

July 4th, 2008

There are many ways to relieve stress. In fact, with such a plethora of ideas to choose from it could become stressful! After becoming an adult with all of the responsibilities and strains that come with it, it seems like we slowly lose our natural ability to have fun. With our hectic lifestyles, we tend to ignore our stress levels and act as if chronic stress is somehow natural. But sadly, uncontrolled stress levels can lead to physical or mental illness and cause or contribute to dangerous conditions such as high blood pressure. So it’s important to take stock of your stress and take action to relieve it.

Firstly, if at all possible the best way to start is to take some time off your normal, mundane and tiring routine and have break! Take a day or two off and take a getaway trip to some exciting or interesting place you’ve been wanting to see. If you’re pressed for case or don’t like travel you can achieve the same results by just doing something different or going somewhere new in your local area. Sit back and enjoy the scenery. It feels great to leave the boring everyday life behind now and then. Enjoy the new sights and sounds and appreciate them, because most people are not able to do this regularly. This is strictly a tactic for urgent circumstances and can help kickstart you onto a new, lower stress pathway.

The second factor to consider is other people: love ‘em or hate ‘em! Some people find relief and solace being among their loved ones; others have to get away from them once in a while. If you are a working professional, either a mom or a dad, then chances are you are always busy with your work and have little time to spend with your children. The resulting guilt only increases your stress. So take this opportunity to take your kids out for a picnic, to the beach or a trip to the theme park. For many people, their families are a big source of joy and happiness and spending some extra time with them can go a long way toward de-stressing.

On the other hand, if are single or if your relationships are currently a source of tension you may be better off hanging out with friends! Call up some friends to chill out at the pub and have a great time. Or there may be times when you just want to be alone. There’s nothing wrong with that. The important thing is for you to divert yourself away from the source of your stress.

Everyone loves music, whatever form that may take. This effective stress buster is an easy and quick way to relax and loosen up when you don’t have a lot of time available. Sing along if you’re in the mood. There is a lot of scientific evidence showing that both music and singing relieve stress and lower blood pressure. Singing is actually a good physical workout and relieves muscle tension as effectively as any other exercise.

Speaking of workouts, a good blast of physical activity is a great stress reliever. Some people prefer aerobic exercise and others like anaerobic workouts. While aerobic exercise like jogging is generally better for lowering your blood pressure and strengthening your heart, an intense session on a punching bag or other strenuous exertion can often relieve stress more effectively.

After a workout you may need another form of stress relief: rest and relaxation. Most of us don’t even get the eight hours of sleep we used to believe sufficient, let alone the 9 or 10 hours many experts now recommend.

Taking a break, spending time with friends and family, listening to music, exercise and rest; these are just a few easy ways to unwind and prevent modern stress from taking another casualty.
